Yumekui Merry

Yumekui Merry (夢喰いメリー Yumekui Merī^?, lit. Dream Eater Merry) is a Japanese action fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Ushiki Yoshitaka. The series is serialized inHoubunsha's seinen manga magazine Manga Time Kirara Forward. The manga was adapted into an anime television series by J.C. Staff and began airing on January 6, 2011.

Plot

Yumeji Fujiwara, a young male student like any other, gained the power to see the aura of other people's dreams, and is able to predict what kind of dream they will have the following night, after an event that occurred 10 years ago. Since then, he started to have weird dreams with cats following him for an unknown reason, where he learns thanks to the boss of the cat army, John Doe, that his body is needed to access the real world. One day, as he was about to come back home after his errands, a mysterious girl falls on top of him. This girl, called Merry Nightmare, is actually a dream demon, who's searching for a way to come back in her world. As Yumeji decides to help her, the gate to the world of dreams opens again, this time in full daylight. She appears in the daydream world and wards off the Dream Demon "Chaser John Doe" looking for an answer to how to get back to her world. It seems as if John Doe knows something about Merry.

Characters

Yumeji Fujiwara (藤原 夢路 Fujiwara Yumeji^?)

Yumeji is the main character of Yumekui Merry. Student in high school, he received 10 years ago the ability to perceive the aura of people's dreams, which allows him to predict what kind of dreams they are going to have. He is a lazy, yet strong-willed and determined person with a heart of gold, who is always ready to help others. He is also a member of a writing club at his high school, and is a big fan of the superhero called Guricho. He meets Merry when she falls on top of him as he comes back from his errands, and together, they enter a daydream - basically, a dream that occurs in full daylight. He is firmly decided to help Merry to come back in the Dreamworld, even if she is not convinced at the beginning, but they soon end up becoming very good friends. He had a scar on his right hand just like Merry but now it is totally gone without a trace.

Merry Nightmare (メリー・ナイトメア Merry Nightmare^?)

Merry is the title character of Yumekui Merry, and is a dream demon from the Dreamworld. Unlike the other dream demons, she doesn't need to possess a human to enter the real world, as she has her own body. Searching for a door to come back to the Dreamworld, she falls on Yumeji one day, who wants to help her to find her way back home. At first reluctant, when a daydream occurs and when she saves Yumeji's life, she accepts his help. She is able to break the daydreams in order to get back in the real world. She can't eat spicy food or drink carbonated soda, but she loves doughnuts above everything and likes video games a lot. She currently works at the Tachibana restaurant. Merry's distinct features include horizontal slit-shaped pupils similar to that of sheep and a scar on her right hand.

Isana Tachibana

Voiced by: Ai Kayano

Isana is Yumeji's childhood friend. Daughter of the cook of a restaurant in the city, she's a kind and quite shy girl who works with her father. Yumeji saved her as she was about to fall from a playground when she was young. She also commented once that she has a feeling that she had met Merry before but shook the idea off as her imagination.

Mei Hoshino

Another friend of Yumeji, and leader of the writing club. A kind and soft-spoken girl with green hair and glasses, she ends up being the victim of a dream demon called Chris Evergreen.

Takateru Akiyanagi

Another friend of Yumeji, and member of the writing club. He loves writing poems and is often seen with a pen and a piece of paper to write on it.

Saki Kirishima

Another friend of Yumeji, and member of the writing club. Quite tomboyish, she's fascinated by Yumeji's ability to see the aura of dreams.

John Doe

A dream demon called "The Chaser", leader of the cat army who appears in Yumeji's dreams. He seems to have a interest in Yumeji, in order to get his body to enter the real world.

Yui Konagi

Yui is a young girl whom Yumeji meets in a supermarket. She has a strong interest in puppets, and can't help collecting them. She's the vessel of another dream demon, Engi Threepiece.

Engi Threepiece

Voiced by: Aya Endo

Engi is a dream demon like Merry, who however needs a vessel to access the real world. She wants to avenge her older sister, who was tricked in going to the real world and ended up being killed there. Engi thus asked Yui's help.

IS (Infinite Stratos)

S (Infinite Stratos) (IS〈インフィニット・ストラトス〉 IS (Infinitto Sutoratosu)^?) is a Japanese light novel series by Izuru Yumizuru with illustrations provided by Okiura. As of December 2010, 6 volumes have been published by Media Factory under their MF Bunko J label. A mangaadaptation by Kenji Akahoshi started serialization in the seinen manga magazine Monthly Comic Alive on May 27, 2010. An anime adaptation began broadcasting in Japan on January 7, 2011.

Plot

In the near future, a Japanese scientist engineers a powered exoskeleton called "Infinite Stratos" (IS). Possessing technology and combat capabilities far more advanced than any other weapon system, the IS threatens to destabilize the world. Faced with such an overpowering weapon, the nations of the world enact the "Alaska Treaty", which states that IS will never be used for military combat and that existing IS technology must be equally distributed to all nations, to prevent any one nation for dominating the others. The introduction of the IS does however have a major effect on society. As IS can only be operated by women, the power balance between men and women is broken, with women coming to dominate society over men.

Ten years after the first IS were introduced, the world has entered a new age of peace. The peace is shattered, however, by an unexpected discovery. A 15 year old Japanese boy, named Ichika Orimura, is discovered to be capable of operating an IS. Realizing the potential, Ichika is forced by the Japanese government to attend the prestigious Infinite Stratos Academy, an international academy where IS pilots from all over the world are trained. Thus his busy school life surrounded by girls begins.

Ichika Orimura (織斑 一夏 Orimura Ichika^?)

The protagonist of Infinite Stratos. He is a first year student at the IS academy. His older sister, Chifuyu, is a legendary IS pilot who raised him when the siblings parents abandoned them a young age. Despite how harshly she treats him, he loves his sister dearly. Ichika has a habit of personally assessing the situation with interior monologue as well as easily guessing what he is thinking. As the first male IS pilot, his new reputation has made him somewhat famous. His first fight was with Cecilia for the position of class representative which sorely tested the girl but loses because his IS energy shields ran out before he managed to hit her one last time. Nonetheless, he becomes the new class representative. With practice he became one of the strongest IS pilots and eventually is able to defeat Laura, who was able to easily defeat both Ling and Cecilia. He pilots the Byakushiki (白式^?)IS, one of only two developed 4th generation IS and a short-range melee-class IS.^[1] He also possesses the Yukihira type 2, an IS energy blade that once belong to his sister.

Houki Shinonono (篠ノ之 箒 Shinonono Hōki^?)

Houki is a first year student at the IS academy and has been friends with Ichika since they were kids though they have not seen each other for six years.^[2] She has a very long ponytail.^[3] Her place of residence is home to a kendo dojo and she has been interested inkendo since she was young. Houki even competes in kendo competitions at a national level and was the winner of the national tournament that was hosted one year before the story of Infinite Stratos began.^[4] She is part of the kendo club at the IS academy. Her older sister Tabane is the creator of the IS yet Houki hates her because six years ago, Ichika agreed to become her boyfriend if she could win the national kendo tournament of their grade. However, the day of the tournament was also the day the IS were introduced to the world. Because of their links to Tabane, Houki's family was placed under government protection and Houki was forced to withdraw from the kendo tournament. Since that incident, Houki has hated her sister for moving her away from the boy she loves and abandoning their family. Despite not seeing him for a long time, Houki still harbors strong feelings for Ichika as her continuing practice of kendo was her only link to him. She is currently his roommate at their dorms and tends to get jealous when other girls are around him. She pilots the Akatsubaki (紅椿^?) IS, one of only two developed 4th generation IS and a short-range melee-class IS.

Cecilia Alcott (セシリア オルコット Seshiria Orukotto^?)

Cecilia is a first year student at the IS academy and is the IS cadet representative from England, as part of the British Aristocracy. Her father was a weak and timid man who had little influence both inside and outside the Alcott family which made her swore to never marry a weak man (A difficulty due to the shift in social status). She was orphaned 3 years ago after a train accident and was forced to protect her family fortune from those who wished to claim a stake of it. She fights with Ichika for the position of class representative, but manages to win only because his IS energy shields ran out before he manages to hit her. She soon starts to see him as a true man and falls in love with him. She pilots the Blue Tears IS, a long-range sniper-class IS, which can deploy four remotely controlled 'drones' (aka 'Blue Tears', for which the IS is named) for engaging enemies at short and medium range.

Huang Lingyin (凰 鈴音 Fan Rinin^?)

Lingyin is a first year student at the IS academy, the class representative of her class and is the IS cadet representative from China. Like Houki, Lingyin has been friends with Ichika since they were little. She's has been in love with Ichika since he protected her against four school bullies. Lingyin at first becomes extremely hostile to Ichika after he forgets the details of a promise proposed by her (which was if she became an excellent cook, he would be her boyfriend). Her family runs a Chinese restaurant. She is also called "Ling" (鈴 Rin^?) as a pet name by others. She pilots the Shenlong (甲龍 Shenron / Kōryū^?) IS, a short-to-medium-range melee-type IS with powerful 'Impact Cannons' hidden in the shoulder armor.

Charlotte Dunois (シャルロット デュノア Sharurotto Dunoa^?)

Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa

Charlotte is a first year student at the IS academy and is the IS cadet representative from France. Charlotte was originally introduced in the series as "Charles", the second 'male' IS pilot student that was transferred into Ichika's class. Charlotte's true purpose, however, was at the academy was to spy on Ichika and discover how he is able to pilot an IS. Because she is mistaken for a male pilot and to keep them together, she and Ichika become new roommates. As a result of this arrangement, Ichika later discovers her true gender. When Ichika learns Charlotte's father and his corporation used her to spy on him, Ichika decides to help protect her. She later falls in love with Ichika due to his bravery. She pilots the Rafale Revive Custom II IS (ラファール・リヴァイヴ・カスタムII Rafāru Revaivu Kasutamu II^?).

Laura Bodewig (ラウラ ボーデヴィッヒ Raura Bādovihhi^?)

Laura is a first year student at the IS academy and is the IS cadet representative from Germany. A genetically-engineered super-soldier, Laura is a member of the German military and holds the rank of second lieutenant. She has red eyes and long silver hair. Her most distinct feature is a black eye patch covering her left eye. Her left eye glows yellow, the result of a failed nano-machine experiment that was meant to help her pilot an IS better. Laura was under Chifuyu's tutelage^[5] when the latter was in the German army and holds Chifuyu in high regard as Chifuyu helped her and was her role model when she suffered a depression for not being the strongest. Laura original purpose in coming to the IS academy is to punish Ichika, who she blames for his sister withdrawing from the 2nd IS International Fighting Tournament. She was unaware that Ichika has been kidnapped and that Chifuyu had withdrawn in order to go save him. She at firsts easily defeats Ling and Cecilia but loses to Ichika. In desperation, she vows to kill him and goes berserk but is defeated again by Ichika who also calms and console her in the Inter-IS subspace. Upon learning Ichika strength is his freedom to choose and helping those around him and Chifuyu's advice, Laura decides to become Ichika's bodyguard to protect him against the other girls as his "bride" (a misunderstanding of her knowledge of Japanese culture). After consoling her in the sub space, she realizes how special Ichika really is and falls in love with him. Laura pilots the Schwarzer Regen (シュヴァルツェア レーゲン Shuwarutsea Rēgen^?) IS.

Chifuyu Orimura (織斑 千冬 Orimura Chifuyu^?)

Chifuyu is Ichika's older sister. She is 24 years old and is in charge of Ichika's class at the IS academy. She was the Japanese pilot for the first generation IS machines and was said to be the strongest IS pilot at one point before retiring. During her retirement, she looked after her brother and raised him by herself after their parents abandoned them. She deeply cares for Ichika as she sees him as her only family. Chifuyu was also the one who enrolled Ichika to the IS academy to keep him safe from other countries. Chifuyu once wielded Yukihira, a powerful IS energy blade that is now in Ichika's possession. Chifuyu was a close friend of Tabane Shinonono, the creator of the IS, which explains how their younger siblings became childhood friends.

Maya Yamada (山田 真耶 Yamada Maya^?)

Voiced by: Noriko Shitaya

Maya is the other instructor in charge of Ichika's class. She used to be an IS Japanese representative cadet.

Tabane Shinonono (篠ノ之 束 Shinonono Tabane^?)

Voiced by: Yukari Tamura

Tabane is Houki's older sister and the creator of the IS. She mysteriously disappeared after introducing the IS and is currently the most wanted person in the world as many seek her for her knowledge about the IS. She is a close friend of Chifuyu, Ichika's older sister. Houki resents being related to her due to what happened to their family and Ichika 6 years ago and has hated her since.

Dan Gotanda (五反田 弾 Gotanda Dan^?)

Voiced by: Makoto Yasumura

Dan is a close friend of Ichika's back from their days in middle school.

Ran Gotanda (五反田 蘭 Gotanda Ran^?)

Voiced by: Noriko Obato

Ran is Dan's younger sister and is currently attending a private girls' school. She is in her third year of middle school and is the student council president. Ran has feelings for Ichika.^[6]

Haiyoru! Nyaruani – Remember My Love

Synopsis

Animated Flash shorts based on the light novel series "Haiyore! Nyaruko-san." In these shorts, Nyarlko, an anthropomorphized female version of Nyarlathotep from the Cthulhu Mythos, is constantly being told off by Mahiro, a normal human boy, for all the crazy or stupid things she does.

In one of the shorts, Nyarlko is drawing a cover design for a body pillow. It turns out that the pillow's subject is a half-dressed Mahiro in what appears to be a hot and heavy scene with Nyarlko. Naturally, Mahiro proceeds to stab Nyarlko in the hand with a fork and threatens to kill her if she releases the pillow design.

Other shorts revolve around various gags and occasionally feature Cthuko, an anthropomorphized female version of Cthugha, who's madly in love with Nyarlko.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes (探偵オペラ ミルキィホームズ Tantei Opera Mirukii Hōmuzu) is amedia franchise owned by the Japanese trading card game company Bushiroad.
